Should H-2 not fly at Fort Funston?

Postby Steve Rodrigues » Wed Feb 06, 2008 5:29 pm

Our current rules have a provision where a H-2 pilot can fly at the Fort if they launch and go directly to the beach. (Please read the rules for the details)

This provision has led to some less than great flights, and lately one serious violation / incident.

Doing a sledder at the Fort has very little worth to a pilots training, but can pose quite a bit of risk to both the pilot and the site.

The question arises; Should Fort Funston be strictly H-3, with no provision for H-2 flight?

This will probably be a topic of discussion at the next meeting.

We had a huge turnout at the club meeting and got lots of good energy and suggestions from all the H-2's, 3's and 4's too!

Rather than prohibiting H-2's from Fort Funston, I want to steer us towards making the Training Bowl a safe launch point to access the lower cliffs south of the Fort. This way qualified H-2's can get a chance to soar without the dangers of the main cliff at the Fort.

There are many details and logistics to work out regarding safety guidelines, mentoring, networking, and work parties. I'm swamped at the present time, but will get on it ASAP.

Please watch this discussion board for updates on this exciting project!
